“At EPA, we’re embedding innovation into our systems, not resisting it. From AI tools that speed up environmental reviews to smarter monitoring and emissions tracking, we’re moving fast.”
Administrator Zeldin’s remarks echo a broader trend within the agency. The EPA has already recorded more than 100 AI use cases, spanning environmental reviews, emissions tracking, and advanced monitoring. Permitting, however, remains one of the most urgent areas for change.
Why Faster Permitting Matters
For companies, expedited approvals mean less time lost in uncertainty and more ability to plan, build, and innovate. Data centers, renewable energy facilities, and infrastructure projects all depend on predictable timelines.
For states, modernized permitting processes reduce administrative backlogs, free staff from repetitive review tasks, and enhance the ability to focus on substantive environmental safeguards.
For the public, faster permitting does not mean weaker environmental standards. With AI handling rote tasks, regulators can spend more time scrutinizing the most meaningful impacts—strengthening, not eroding, oversight.
